Event: Global Beauty Masters (Battle of the Strands)

Episode 102 – Lamborghini Challenge / Color Challenge

Client: Krista White (Americas Next Top Model – Cycle 14 Winner) Judge

Now that the show is airing on TV, I can now publically talk about it. Those darn NDAs get the best of you!!! Being so excited about something and you can’t even talk about it, post photos on Instagram, no Facebook post, no tweets neither. It has been killing me to share this with everyone.

The first episode I missed out on, due to other obligations. Plus it worked out because the first episode was already set, and didn’t need me for styling or wardrobe managing. Skipping to episode 2…. My appearance as a wardrobe stylist for TV. Can I just say I was beyond excited?? I can’t think of words to express my feelings for this event. This was monumental. I was brought on the team by my good friend Lyle Malapit to be the Wardrobe Coordinator / Lead Stylist. What exactly is this?? Well first of all this was a new job for the organization. They never had this job before, and it took some time for me to convince Lyle that they needed someone like me, to manage this area. Lyle and I share similar habits… we think we are so amazing we can handle it all or finding good help is hard to find. That is one thing Las Vegas has taught me. I remember we had a photo shoot to campaign for this event and the promotional work for the actual televised portion. Needless to say, I was able to present myself to the team of BOTS (Battle of the Strands) that they saw a place for me.

Judge, Krista White styled by me, wearing Debbie Carroll Designs

Ok, let’s skip the preliminary portion. The second episode was beyond exciting. I will have to say, being on TV, or at least being on set for a TV show and seeing it air, is beyond surreal. When dressing Krista, I know her, personally beyond America’s Next Top Model. We have worked together during Fashion Week Las Vegas, as one of the judges for the runway model competition. To actually style her, on national TV was a different aspect. I had pulled wardrobe from multiple local designers. Some where a bit costume, some were evening wear, and some were cocktail designers. I wasn’t too sure which dress would be perfect for her. Doing TV for the first time, and seeing what different TV host or TV personalities wears, I knew it had to be more toned down than what I normally dress models for photo shoots.

I remember when Krista came to my room, and we looked over wardrobe. We tried on so many dresses. With her, and her measurements, we knew we had to have her wear something with a smaller, more form fitting dresses. Debbie Carol Designs, ideal for her. We tried on multiple dresses of Debbie’s but I knew she would go back to that dress. Debbie’s dresses has a signature look to it. Low cut open back, with a high neck line, lace with a lining of a nude color. Very form fitting. I had yellow dress, white, dress, pink dress, and a solid light blue dress. I had to go back to the yellow dress and express my feeling for this dress. With Krista’s skin tone, and the bright yellow, it complimented her for sure. Plus with the challenge being Lamborghini Challenge, yellow color is similar to a Lamborghini. She tried it on, and of course it was perfect. She ended up taking the Yellow dress and the white one. She still was unsure about the dress. Now I did tell her, she needs to be careful. This show is only filmed for 4 episodes. Debbie’s dresses gorgeous and very very very sexy. They are, however, very similar. We had to be sure she wouldn’t be seen too quickly in similar dresses. I kept pushing for the yellow dress. That the white dress is too bridal, bridal shower type of dress. We also suggested some minimal accessories. No necklace, because of the high neckline and the details one the dress went all the up to the neckline. A necklace would be too much. Just an earring and bracelets will be fine.

Let’s just say from the episode and the final images, Krista went with the yellow dress. It looked absolutely stunning on her. It fit her perfectly! Check out the episode on Global Beauty Masters – Episode 2 down below!!!

** Feel free to SKIP to 28:25 to see Krista White in her dress on screen!!

Side note, before viewing this episode, can I just say the scene with Charlie from Hair Loves Magic, complaining about wire hangers. As a wardrobe stylist, as an industry professional, I do not use or have wire hangers in my personal closet or on set of shoots, event, etc. They don’t last, and don’t support garments, and garments are more unattractive when hung on wire hangers. However, I was in the wardrobe room, preparing the garments and accessories. Suddenly I was radioed to bring wardrobe in the war tents. Not being prepared, and thought this wasn’t the time I was scheduled to be on set. I just grabbed my rack, my steamer, and rushed to the tents. Went back to grab the accessories and started to set up. I avoided the cameras so I wouldn’t be seen, looking flustered. I don’t like to be presented as someone who is “unprepared”, that is unprofessional. I had to leave the wire hangers. I didn’t have time to switch them out with the wooden ones I had brought from my own wardrobe kit.

Going back to Charlie, and the wire hangers, for him to use every excuse why his look wasn’t polished enough is unprofessional. After viewing the episode air on TV, you can see he is a character that finds a way to put fault or blame on someone/ something else. Wire hanger has nothing to do with the reason why the hair / makeup isn’t polished, or how the garments are styled. And you can’t point blame to dress and wire hanger, because I did make sure all the dresses that was used for the competition was steamed. The hangers were irrelevant.

Needless to say, what I have experienced on set for the first day, I made sure I wasn’t going to have a repeat going forward. From preparing the garments the night before, steaming , changing out hangers, organizing the accessories. I had three more days of this. I wasn’t going to allow it to repeat the same mistakes.

For this challenge, wardrobe was use by Mauricio Montebello | MengXi Wang | Sabrina Kadabra
